Demand for Mid-Segment Ventilators on the Rise
Tuesday, 06 July 2010

ImageOn market trends

There were more numbers of transport/compact emergency care ventilators sold in 2009. The market for mid-segment ventilators is likely to increase further by more than 25 percent.

On type of ventilators

Ventilation segment can be divided into the following types:

  • NIV (bi-level ventilators - homecare/RCU) for COPD, neuromuscular disorders, restrictive disorders, obesity and hypoventilation, and periodic breathings
  • Transport ventilators (volume and pressure ventilators) for trauma, ambulances, inter hospital shifting, emergency care, and step down ICU (low-end and mid-end)
  • ICU ventilators (covers entire range of ventilation modes and lung mechanics) - these ventilators can be further grouped under three categories

On total installation base

Approximately, 15,000-18,000 NIVs are in use in the Indian market and approximately 4000-5000 will be added in 2010. Around 15,000 high-end ICU ventilators are there in the market and 8000 new ICU ventilators will be added in 2010 (low-end to high-end). ResMed has over 55 percent market share in NIV and five percent in transport ventilators.

On emerging trends and new technologies

NIV and compact light-weight multi application ventilators are emerging and will gain over 40 percent of ventilator market share. Most of the companies are launching compact-sized ventilators and trying to pitch in rural hospitals, medium and small sized hospitals, emergency care, and transport.

On challenges and opportunities

Most of the imported ventilators offer a high technology and focus on best clinical outcomes by providing best quality ventilation, however, Indian manufacturers use old and obsolete technologies and the accuracy of set and delivered parameters becomes a question mark. Hence, the quality of ventilation is compromised.
