Improved AIIMS' device aids hearing, filters noise The Australian-made device, Nucleus 5, provides clear hearing by processing information in milliseconds and filtering out background noise. Patients needing an implant will now benefit from this device costing-Rs. 9.94 lakh-provided free at AIIMS for government employees. It is thinner and tougher than previous models of cochlear implants. The implant design enables to distinguish between frequencies, such as a telephone ring and music. In earlier devices, distinguishing various frequencies was a little difficult. A person would not be able to tell from the noise whether it was a telephone or music system, clearly. The system is water resistant with an extremely user-friendly remote controlled processor. The light and small design means it is convenient for people, especially children who have thin skin and bones. Fortis Hiranandani launches IVF clinic Fortis Hospital, Vashi has taken an initiative to address all problems related to infertility in men and women. The clinic was inaugurated by the former Miss World and well-known actress Diana Hayden. Fortis Bloom clinic has been established by India's well-known gynecologists and infertility specialists-Dr. Hrishikesh Pai and Dr. Nandita Palshetkar, three years ago. Bloom IVF has four other centers across the country. Dr. Rajeev Boudhankar, Director, Fortis Hiranandani, said, "The IVF clinic will be a boon to all Navi Mumbai residents. Patients can now look forward to a solution for all problems related to infertility." The IVF or test tube baby treatment has established itself in India since 1985, when the first Indian test tube baby was born. The present success rate of Bloom IVF Fertility Centers has touched 40 to 50 percent, per attempt, in women less than 35 years of age. Medanta Medicity launches Brain Suite system The neurosciences service at Medanta has started using Miyabi Brain Suite-guided brain tumor surgery system. This system permits the neuro surgeon to have an MRI study on the patient during surgery, and if tumor remains hidden to the human eye, can be detected by special MRI sequences, and can be targeted using neuronavigation (which works on the same principle as the GPS system). Tumor fluorescence can help detect small bits and pieces of tumor that may otherwise likely be left behind. All this, while the microscope display digitally outlines the critical brain areas, critical nerve fibers, and also the outline of the tumor. This has permitted an aggressive removal of highly malignant brain tumors, which will enhance the survival. Lilavati Hospital installs SOMATOM CT scanner Lilavati Hospital has installed SOMATOM Definition Flash second generation dual source CT scanner from Siemens. The scanner opens doors to unprecedented levels of patient-friendliness with the speed to cover the entire thorax in less than a second thus obviating the need to hold breath especially in cardiac and pediatric imaging. It also enables reduction in radiation dose for all scans resulting in dose down to sub-mSv for cardiac imaging. At the same time, X-CARE allows protecting individual organs and the radiation sensitive body regions like female breasts, thyroid gland, and lens of the eyes by accurately and efficiently minimizing exposure and thus stands as a healthiest scanner of its kind. |
