₹3.7 Crore for Improving Facilities at Eye Hospital

The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) here could emerge as one of the biggest and most-modern eye hospitals in the southern part of the country, with the government going in for a major infrastructural investment in the institute. A total of ₹3.715 crore has been sanctioned now for purchasing modern equipment and for improving the infrastructure in RIO. The Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) machine is slated to be the newest acquisition of RIO at ₹1 crore. (OCTA) is a new, non-invasive imaging technique that generates volumetric angiography images and has wide applicability for evaluating retinal vascular diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, artery and vein occlusions, and glaucoma.

Retinal camera for detecting retinopathy of prematurity, a condition that affects premature infants and which can potentially lead to permanent blindness, is being purchased at ₹20 lakh. Other new equipment being purchased include automatic filed analyzer, portable green laser machine, and indirect ophthalmoscope, apart from several new surgical equipment. For infrastructure development, including water connection and sewage facility, ₹41.54 lakh has been allocated. Efforts are on to make the new seven-storey block for RIO functional as soon as possible. The new block had been constructed to ease the huge space constraints and overcrowding that RIO is facing at present. Once the building is completed, referral OP clinics and several specialty clinics would be shifted here. A modern theatre complex, laboratory and a day care ward are also being set up in the new block. – The Hindu
