3,293 deaths in a day take India’s total pandemic toll above 2 lakh

India recorded more than 3,000 deaths related to Covid-19 in a single day, as an unprecedented outbreak continued to rip through the world’s second most populous nation.

More than 3.6 lakh people tested positive for the virus in a 24-hour period, the highest number of fresh cases in any country in any day, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on April 28.

3,293 patients succumbed to the illness in just 24 hours, marking the deadliest day in India’s struggle with the pandemic, and taking the total death toll above 2 lakh.

Active infections inched closer to 30 lakh, overwhelming the country’s healthcare system that’s battling a shortage of oxygen, vital drugs and critical care beds.

The central government said it has provided over 15 crore vaccine doses to states and union territories for free. Of this, the total consumption including wastage is 14.64 crore, a press statement said. That leaves over 1 crore doses that are still available with the states and are yet to be administered.

Over the next three days, 80 lakh additional doses will be received by the states and union territories, the government added.

India will begin the third phase of its immunisation programme on May 1, when everyone above the age of 18 will be eligible or the shot. BloombergQuint
