Balurghat Hospital to Get Blood Components Separation Unit

In a remarkable achievement by the district Health department, a complete Blood Components Separation Unit (BCSU) will start functioning by the end of March at Balurghat district hospital, Chief Medical Officer of Health (South Dinajpur), Dr Sukumar Dey, said. It has been decided that BCSU will start running on the ground floor of the hospital where the blood bank is situated. “This is our significant achievement. A fund amounting to Rs 1.5 crore has been allotted by the state government. Public Works Department is developing the infrastructure. Primarily, it has been decided to set up 21 new automated electronic machines for the entire process,” Dr Dey said. “It is expected that the process of installation of machines will be completed by the end of January and accordingly, the District Health department will submit a report to the state government. On the basis of our report, separate teams both from the state and the Center will inspect the spot for final approval,” he added.

According to a district hospital source, there are five technicians recruited for the blood banks. After a full-fledged training conducted by the concerned state Health department, they will initially start working at BCSU. Notably, the human blood has four main components including plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets and the requirement of separating platelets is very important particularly during the onset of monsoon every year due to dengue cases. “Once the BCSU is built and starts functioning at the hospital premises, we will surely provide better treatment to dengue victims suffering from low platelet count,” Dr Dey said. – Millennium Post
