Diagnostics – The beginning of the story

Looking at the current pandemic situation, the entire world is reeling under lot of pressure of coming up with new drugs, vaccines, drugs for after-effects, drugs for standard care, etc. But for all this, the inevitable role of baseline diagnostics is of utmost importance. Without the baseline values of the essential parameters, the doctors, or the pharmaceutical companies, cannot proceed ahead.

And this is the segment which we are catering to.

Intervein Laboratories is a central lab catering to clinical research and bioequivalence/bioavailability of the drugs-generic, NCE or ANDA. Here we do testing of all the alb parameters for patients/subjects, taking part in a clinical trial, and giving the end objective of the trial.

This is the time when the whole world is joining hands to fulfill this humongous need of the drugs and vaccines, and the world has become flat. The preclinical studies are done in one part of the world, the phase-I is done in another part of the world, phase II/III done in still another part, and pharmaco vigilance could be done globally and the data compiled to make some conclusions. And this is the time for laboratories like us to provide the diagnostic data correctly and quickly.

In our lab, we have a complete solution for the clinical trials being conducted all over the country. And we do have a lot of new opportunities coming up. We have made this strategy for increasing our infrastructure so that we can cater to more number of patients/subjects.

Since the concept of our lab is a central lab, we move the samples from all across to our central location so that there is no variability in the results as each lab will have different equipment, different reagents, different conditions, and there is a huge possibility of varied results.

So, the biggest challenge for us is the logistics. The pre-analytical part of the handling of samples is very critical –maintaining the temperatures, the timelines because of the stability, etc.

The diagnostic industry has evolved at a jet-set speed and is still evolving. Every five years, the equipment used in the laboratory is upgraded and more and more automation is brought in.

The sensitivity of the equipment also keeps on getting lower to provide better and faster results.

One classic example is of the HIV test. Previously, there was no method to detect the virus while in window period, and now the virus can be detected as early as 48 hours of infection. So, this is the kind of evolution happening in the diagnostic industry, which helps the doctors diagnose the disease early and begin early treatment and save lives.

There is also a lot of automation brought in, which reduces the errors that used to happen due to manual operations. So, the IT has made the diagnostic industry much faster, easier, and accurate.

Moving forward, we are optimistic that the diagnostic industry is going to be very important and play a key role in be it diagnosis of the disease, discovery of a new drug/vaccine, or proving the equivalence of the already marketed drugs.

I have been in the industry since the last 16 years and have seen it evolve and am still looking forward to serving with better and quality work.
