Ensure Speedy Facelift of OGH Heritage Wing

Days after the government said it would undertake renovation work of the heritage portion of Osmania general hospital (OGH) and shift patients from the old building within three months, the Nizam’s family has urged health minister Etela Rajender to speed up the work. “It is great news for all and we hope that concerned authorities will restore the glory of Osmania hospital’s heritage building. We want the government to take immediate initiatives to begin the work process without any further delay,” said Najaf Ali Khan, grandson of last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. The Osmania general hospital (OGH) was built Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur, the Nizam VII, over an 27 acres. The building was completed in 1919 and has a fusion of Indian and Islamic architecture. The costs incurred in treatment, medicines, and even food provided to patients was taken care of by the Royal treasury.

Presently, the building is in a bad condition due to negligence of concerned authorities, experts say. “The Nizam family members are deeply hurt to see a structure constructed with a great vision now in such a sorry state. With proper care, it can be sustained for another 100 years as per the report of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), 2015,” Najaf Ali Khan told TOI. “It is also listed as a heritage structure. The edifice has to be protected for future generations. We sincerely appeal to chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to bring back the glory of all the heritage structures across the state, including the OGH building,” he added. OGH is among the oldest and largest premier hospitals in the state and has been serving the underprivileged for decades. – TOI
