First Surgery Under Ayushman Bharat Scheme at IGIMS

The dentistry department of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) successfully conducted the surgery of large size of maxillary sinus tumor of face under the Ayushman Bharat scheme of the government of India. A 13-year-old patient, Ujala Kumari, who hails from Samastipur, had been suffering from infection in her left jaw for the last two years. The girl underwent surgery free of cost under the Center’s health insurance scheme for poor families. IGIMS superintendent Dr Manish Mandal said operation under the Ayushman Bharat scheme was conducted for the first time in the state. “The tumor was in melted condition. It got aggravated as she consulted several doctors and took the prescribed medicines, which further deformed her face. She was admitted to the IGIMS on December 1 and the operation was successfully conducted on Tuesday,” he said.

The two-hour-long surgery was conducted by a team of doctors led by the head of dentistry department Dr A K Sharma. “The tumor was removed and sent for biopsy. The patient is out of danger now and she has been shifted to general ward. The hospital will provide all medicines to her free of cost,” Dr Sharma added. The other doctors involved in the surgical operation included Dr Mohammad Javed Iqbal, Dr Devika Singh, Dr Nivedita, Dr Asish and Dr Sonal. “Maxillary sinus tumor or odontogenic tumor often occurs in the jaw bones of kids. The infection starts from the tooth-forming tissue due to abnormal development of the jaw bone. It spreads to the surrounding tissues of jaw and affects the teeth,” Dr Iqbal said, adding Ujala would be discharged from the hospital within the next four days. – TOI
