Haryana Medical Apathy: Health Minister Calls Meeting Following Mass “Botched-up” Cataract Surgeries

About a fortnight after extreme medical apathy surfaced at four hospitals in Haryana, the Health minister, Anil Vij met with health officials of the state. The meeting was held after nearly 43 people experienced severe pain following their cataract surgeries.

Returning from his foreign trip, Anil Vij decided to hold the meeting after the patients in Haryana struggled with their vision. Nearly 400 people had undergone cataract surgeries at four government hospitals in Haryana.

While some of the politicians were quick in politicising the entire situation, Vij asked the authorities to look into the matter and find the people who are guilty. While talking to Mirror Now, Rajeev Arora, Additional Chief Secretary said that they will review all protocols of the National Programme for Blindness Control and will try to find the ones that have loopholes. He also added that according to preliminary findings, the “contamination of medicine” is to be blamed instead of medical negligence.

On March 29, it was reported that nearly 40 people were admitted to different hospitals in Haryana after they complained of severe eye pain and infection. The patients were admitted to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS). The patients were admitted to the PGI hospitals in Bhiwani, Karnal and Jhajjar.

The “botched-up” surgeries had left the patients struggling with their vision. After this case was highlighted, it was found that these surgeries had been performed on around 400 patients. The public relations officer at the PGIMS stated following the incident, 28 patients had been brought to the Rohtak medical college with the same condition and were being treated. The real cause behind the incident has not been highlighted yet. – Times Now News
