Health Authorities Urged to Set up Blood Bank in Mandi Ahmedgarh

Known for their enthusiasm to donate blood by organizing camps and visiting blood banks at distant localities on special occasions, residents of the town and surrounding localities have urged higher authorities in health department to establish a blood bank and transfusing unit at primary health center here. Patients admitted at government or private hospitals have to run to other cities and towns in emergency as none of the medical centers is authorized to transfuse blood from voluntary donors to recipients struggling for life. Officials at primary health center said the process for storage of blood of various groups has already been started. “Though no process for establishment of blood bank has ever been started, blood storage unit (BSU) was once established here once. Approval for renewal of BSU is awaited,” said chief pharmacist Pardeep Sood.

Residents led by Rotary Club secretary Dr Ravinder Sharma alleged that successive governments had failed to fulfill their long pending demand for establishing a blood bank at the only government medical center of the level of community health center. However, residents of the region are enthusiastic about donating the vital fluid during blood donation camps being organised by NGOs from time to time. “Though the region contributes more than 3,000 units of blood in pool collected by various hospitals at Ludhiana, Malerkotla and Khanna, patients admitted at various hospitals have to run from one blood bank to another in case of emergency,” said Dr Ravinder Sharma. President Social Welfare Organisation Dr Sunit Hind acknowledged that over 1,600 units of blood are collected by various blood banks every year during organisation’s annual blood donation camp being held at Grain Market. “While 1,633 units of blood were collected by 12 blood banks of different cities, during camp organised by our organisation recently, there are still other NGOs organizing blood donation camp as regular feature,” said Dr Sunit Hind maintaining that there was dire need of a blood bank at the town. – Tribune India
