Health Department to Loan Anesthetists to GDMC Hospital

In view of acute shortage of anesthetists in Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital, the health department would deploy anesthetists from other hospitals here on rotational basis till new appointments are made. The Medical Superintendent (MS) GDMC Hospital Dr K K Tamta said that he has requested the director general (DG) health service Dr TC Pant to release the anesthetists of Coronation, Prem Nagar and Raipur hospitals for the biggest government hospital of the state on rotation basis and his request has been accepted. “We are hoping that the health directorate would release these anesthetists soon and with their help, we will finish the pending surgeries,” he said. Meanwhile, operations started in the general hospital of GDMC after three days on Saturday when its lone anesthetist Dr Hema Saxena returned after leave.

There are only five anesthetists posted in the GDMC Hospital and out of them, four are deployed in the female wing to cater to the pregnancy cases which leaves just one anesthetist for the general wing of the hospital. The operations in the general wing of the hospital come to standstill whenever any of the anesthetists goes on leave.  Recently, one former director of state health services, Dr G S Jangpangi offered his free service to the hospital as anesthetist and worked for two months. But recently he has fallen ill which is why he is not in a position to continue his public service. The medical college hospital requires at least ten anesthetists for proper functioning and the authorities are now pinning their hopes on the ongoing recruitment drive to fill the vacancies. – Daily Pioneer
