Dynacount 5D CPC Diagnostics
India is one of the fastest growing markets in IVD, as diagnostics testing is gaining very high prominence with clinicians in making important decisions to treat the patients. The hematology testing, which is no exception, has seen tremendous growth in the last few years.
What is interesting is that in the last two years the 5-part analyzers market has grown faster than the 3-part. In fact market data suggests that among all analyzers sold this year, approximately 50 percent was 5-part. This trend is very prominent in tier I and tier II cities. One of the main reasons for this is the competitive pricing of new models of 5-part cell counters and lower cost per test. Also the new 5-parts are really compact and sometimes come with touch screens thereby removing the need for an external desktop to program and feed patient data in the instrument. Clinician behavior is also fueling this change as they find it useful to test a 5-part differential instead of requesting a 3-part and then a 5-part again for further diagnosis.
This transformation is also accelerated by the COVID pandemic as the need for cell counting is important in treating the patients, lots of new labs directly go for a 5-part instead of starting with a 3-part and then upgrading in a few years. Another catalyst to this transformation is that a lot of labs that have been using a 3-part are upgrading very quickly to 5-part, a 5-part Instrument also allows the user to perform in 3-part mode that gives the flexibility to perform both types of tests on the same instrument .
With so many brands in the market competing for the customer’s attention, how do buyers judge and decide on which product is suitable for their lab? Well for starters always ask for a demonstration to validate metrics like cost per test and consumable consumption. Minimum features one should expect are:
- In-built PC with LCD touchscreen;
- Large capacity of result storage with histograms on the instrument;
- Connectivity to LIS;
- Basophil count on the laser scattering technology; and
- After sales support during the whole life of the product.
In addition to impedance to measure RBC and PLT, a 5-part instrument employs the advanced principle of flow cytometry to differentiate WBC into their five major sub-populations—neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils—based on cell size and complexity (granularity). This opens up a whole gamut of diseases and conditions that can be diagnosed over a much simpler 3-part cell counter.
Labs, however, need to be careful as some 5-part analyzers are not truly 5-part, as in, they do not give all the 5 differentials using lasers. Some of the differentials are still given using impedance or optical absorbance. Customers need to be clear on this before they freeze on a model. Also, total cost per test must include the cost of the clean cycle. Clean cycles vary per model and are essential to prevent carryover of results. Some instruments have a single clean cycle at the end of the day. Some have clean cycles at the end of every test. How the instrument works is essential in comparing the cost per test of various providers.
CPC Diagnostics has been offering solutions for automation for more than 20 years, through new-generation instruments suitable for high, mid, and small laboratories, with excellent after-sales support and remote-diagnostics facilities.
