ICMR report reveals alarming presence of superbugs in 21 leading hospitals
A recent report from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has revealed the alarming presence of superbugs in 21 of the country’s leading hospitals. Superbugs are antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are extremely difficult to control, posing a serious threat to patients during treatment.
The report, part of ICMR’s annual Antimicrobial Resistance Research & Surveillance Network, highlights the presence of these dangerous bacteria in hospitals such as AIIMS Delhi, PGI Chandigarh, Apollo Hospital Chennai, and Gangaram Hospital. These superbugs were found in patient samples, including blood, urine, and other fluids, collected from Outpatient Departments (OPD), wards, and Intensive Care Units (ICU).
The most common superbugs identified in the report were Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli, which have been previously classified as superbugs by the World Health Organization (WHO). Their widespread presence in hospitals raises serious concerns for patient safety and infection control.
This revelation underscores the urgent need for better management of medications and stricter protocols for the disposal of bacterial waste in hospitals to prevent further spread of these resistant bacteria. The Vocal News
