In this wave, share of seriously ill in hospital is up significantly

With the surge in Covid-19 cases in the second wave exceeding the previous peak, the share of serious cases under hospitalisation has also increased significantly as compared to the situation earlier in mid-August last year when cases were rising rapidly.

At present, around 4.5% of active cases are currently on oxygen support, whereas 2.3% are in ICU and 0.4% cases are on ventilator, according to the statistics given by health minister Harsh Vardhan during a Group of Ministers’ meeting on Friday to review the Covid-19 situation in the country.

In mid-August, when the cases were rising, 2.4% of active cases were on oxygen support whereas only 1.8% cases were in ICU and 0.2% were on ventilator.

Due to the rapid surge in last few weeks, India’s active caseload has also increased significantly to over 9.8 lakh cases on Thursday, up from 6.5 lakh cases on August 13. This assumes significance as vaccination has the potential to reduce severity of disease and hence hospitalisation and deaths. Vardhan also said 149 districts have not seen a case in last seven days, eight districts in last 14 days, three districts in last 21 days and as many as 63 districts have not seen a case in last 28 days.

India has exported 6.4 crore Covid vaccine doses to as many as 84 countries so far, he informed the GoM.

Out of these doses, 1 crore have been given as grants to 44 countries, while 3.6 crore jabs to 25 countries have been given under commercial contracts and 1.8 crore to 39 countries through World Health Organisation ’s Covax facility. ToI
