India has 660 medical colleges, 1.01 lakh MBBS seats

There is an increase of 71 per cent medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 660 as of now, informed the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bharati Pravin Pawar in the Parliament today.

He said under their government, there is an increase of 97 per cent in MBBS seats. From 51,348 before 2014 to 101,043 as of now, out of which 52,778 are available in the government medical colleges and the rest 48,265 seats are available in the private medical colleges.

Additionally, there is an increase of 110 per cent in PG seats — from 31,185 before 2014 to 65,335 as of now. This includes 13,246 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) / Fellowship of National Board (FNB) PG seats and 1621 PG seats in the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS).

Meanwhile, the Dept of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh today announced the addition of 1,300 new MBBS seats in medical colleges run by the state government. As many as 13 new medical colleges will start from the 2023-24 academic year, it said. The Indian Express
