India has become a global medical tourism hub, thanks to the quality and affordable medicare.

Addressing the 22nd convocation of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) in New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu said due to affordable Medicare, India has become a major center of medical tourism.

The medical tourism sector in India is growing at 17.2% CAGR. Worth Rs 88085 crore in 2024, it is expected to reach Rs 430700 crore by 2034. The Indian government actively promotes medical tourism and traditional therapies to cement the country’s position as a leading healthcare destination.

The low cost of consultation, accommodation, treatment, medicines, and surgeries makes India one of the most affordable options to avail healthcare services, creating new trends and opportunities in the medical tourism market.

The quality of the procedure is on par with the top facilities available in developed countries while being very affordable compared to developed countries like the US. Central government schemes and interventions have also positively impacted the overall growth of the Indian medical tourism market.

Availability of medical visas under the e-visa section, offering long-term extended stay visas, official guidelines, and organizing campaigns like ‘Heal in India’ are some of the positive government interventions that are increasing the market share of Indian medical tourism.

President said that Indian doctors have made their mark globally. She described doctors as the most important part of the country’s healthcare system and expressed confidence that they would take the health services of the country to greater heights.
