India Has Tremendous Capacity To Combat Covid-19: WHO

NEW DELHI : As India imposed a complete shutdown across 30 states and union territories to combat the spread of coronavirus, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said India has a tremendous capacity to deal the pandemic as it has experience of eradicating small pox and polio.

“There is a need in the number of labs where a surge is seen. India is a very populous country and the future of this virus will be considered in a very highly and densely populated country. India led the world in eradicating two pandemics, small-pox and polio so India has a tremendous capacity,” WHO executive director J Ryan said.

“There are no easy answers. It is exceptionally important that countries like India show the way to the world as they have done before,” he added.

Dr Roderico Ofrin, WHO’s Regional Emergencies Director praised India’s comprehensive and robust response to prevent and contain the spread of Covid-19.

“Its latest announcements related to quarantine and social distancing measures, including recent lockdown of 75 affected districts, suspension of rail, inter-state bus services and metro services are initiatives of unprecedented scale and reflect the country’s resolve to prevent the spread of the pandemic,” he said.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the number of cases worldwide has surpassed 3,30,000, while the number of deaths has exceeded 14,000. In India, the number of Covid-19 cases has jumped to 492 today.

While curfew has been imposed in Punjab and Maharashtra, a total of 30 states and Union Territories have imposed complete lockdown, covering a total of 548 districts in the country, to check the spread of coronavirus.
