Merger of Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital with Kokrajhar MCH sparks protest

The residents of Kokrajhar have initiated an indefinite protest dharna against the Assam Health Department’s decision to shift multiple departments from Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital to the newly established Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital. This move has sparked widespread discontent among the locals, who argue that it will greatly inconvenience patients and disrupt medical services.

The protest began on Friday, with hundreds of people, including community leaders and former political figures, participating to voice their opposition. They claim that the relocation of these crucial departments will deprive many residents of accessible healthcare, especially those who rely on the RNB Civil Hospital for their medical needs.

Former Assam Minister Pramila Rani Brahma has criticized the government’s decision, describing it as ill-conceived and detrimental to public welfare. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a full range of services at the RNB Civil Hospital to ensure that healthcare remains accessible to all sections of society.

Brahma also pointed out that while the establishment of the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital is a positive development, it should not come at the cost of existing facilities that serve a large population. She urged the government to reconsider its decision and engage in a dialogue with the local community to find a more balanced solution.

The protesters have vowed to continue their dharna until the government reverses its decision. They are demanding that the health department retain all departments at the RNB Civil Hospital and ensure that both institutions can function effectively to serve the healthcare needs of Kokrajhar’s residents.
