Mizoram Government Asks Delhi For AIIMS

The Mizoram government had asked the Centre to establish an All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in the state like the one in Delhi, an official release said on Tuesday.

During his trip to the national capital last week, Mizoram governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai met Union home minister Amit Shah and civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri and submitted memoranda in connection with key infrastructure projects in the state, the release said.

It added that on Friday, Pillai had discussed with Shah the proposal for setting up of an AIIMS, an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the hill state.

He asked the Centre to construct a cross-border road which will link south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai town with Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.

In his memorandum, Pillai also sought assistance from the Union home ministry for expansion of National Highway 306, which links Mizoram with Assam, to a four-lane highway and early completion of the India-Bangladesh fencing work, the release said.

Mizoram shares a 318km unfenced international border with Bangladesh. Of this, 233km is to be fenced.

The construction of border fencing, which began in 2005 and is scheduled to be completed by March this year, is likely to miss the deadline following failure by the construction agencies to complete the work within the extended time.

During the meeting on Friday, Shah and Pillai also discussed improvement of security arrangements along the India-Myanmar border, upgrade of Lengpui airport to international standards and setting up of an international trade centre at Zochachhuah village in southernmost of Lawngtlai district on the Mizoram-Myanmar border, the release said.

On January 16, Pillai also met Puri and sought direct flights between Aizawl and Delhi, an official release said.

He also asked for additional flights from the Centre.

Assuring Pillai of all possible help, Puri told him that a joint consultation would be convened soon with the flight operators, the release added.
