AHMEDABAD: By 2025, the Centre aims to have 1 lakh doctors in government hospitals as part of the ‘Health for All’ initiative, said Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Saturday.

The minister was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the 6th national summit on Good, Replicable Practices and Innovations in Public Healthcare Systems, at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. More than 500 government and non-government players of the healthcare sector from across India participated in the event.

“The idea behind the summit is to bring together practitioners on one platform where they can learn from each other about major initiatives and innovations and take them back to their states,” Harsh Vardhan said. “After becoming polio-free, India now proposes to attain the TB-free status by 2025, ahead of the WHO’s target of 2030.” Talking to media, the minister said that under the current government, 21 All India Institutes of Medical Science (AIIMS) are in various stages of development. Fifteen of the institutes have started classes. “In five years, 29,000 MBBS seats and 17,000 postgraduation seats have been added,” he said.

The minister said that the air quality in the national capital is a health issue and talks are on with state governments to explore options. The minister, along with Gujarat CM and deputy CM launched the nation-wide Social Awareness and Actions to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS) initiative during the event. States including Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Tripura, Assam, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh along with the Union Territories of Chandigarh, Diu & Daman, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli were awarded for health service initiatives.-Times Of India
