PMCH to Get Implant Test Center in January

The Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) will be the first state government-run hospital in Bihar to get an implant test center in January. No money will be charged from patients who avail the facilities of the center. An implant is a man-made medical device to replace or support a damaged biological structure in a human body. It can be of different types, including those related to bones, heart, ears and breasts. At present, there is no mechanism to check the quality of medical implants in Bihar. This service is, however, available at AIIMS-Delhi and many private hospitals across the country. PMCH medical superintendent Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad told this newspaper on Monday, “Specialists from different departments like orthopedics, cardiology, gynecology and ENT will first verify all the documents related to the implant and conduct an x-ray in our testing center. Patients, who have been affected by a faulty implant, will be able to claim compensation with the help of our report.”

According to Dr Ranjit Kumar Singh, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the PMCH, “There is an increasing trend of orthopedic implants in which part of a bone is removed and replaced with a metal. People undergo surgeries to replace their damaged knee, wrist, shoulder or ankle these days.” Explaining the problems associated with implants, Dr Ranjit said, “A wrong implant can lead to several complications such as metal poisoning or fixation problems and revision surgeries are performed to remove the faulty one. It is, therefore, necessary to check whether the implant is of good quality and is functioning properly.” – TOI
