Positive impact of transition in medical technology

Diagnostic radiology has been around since many decades now. Diagnosis was not enough so medical experts started looking out for therapy and treatment using radiology equipment and several modifications were done to the conventional equipment to meet the requirements, and a new branch evolved – interventional radiology (IR).

In treatment of many ailments with minimal invasion, IR progressed very well and attained popularity in a very short span of time. It covered almost all the fields of treatment including cardiac, neuro, and vascular interventions. The game changer was its ability to avoid open surgeries, those which were very risky and where patient recovery time was also longer. Later en-route, this field was broadly divided into cardiac and rest of the interventions (vascular interventions).

Vascular interventions have evolved a lot in the past few years. Basic vascular interventions can be done on the latest state-of-the-art high-powered C-arms, that are fitted with digital detectors. Such cost-effective systems are revolutionizing the field of vascular interventions. Low ownership and maintenance cost will encourage the individual practitioners to come out with their own dedicated vascular interventional setups.

So, digital transformation from image intensifiers to FPDs is changing the way work is being done and is accelerating the output and outcomes. Radiology interventions are revolutionized with the availability of big format, high contrast, and sleek, dynamic FPDs having bigger FOV along with sleeker design in fluoroscopic systems that have better and uniform image quality.

In minimally invasive procedures, the accuracy of the procedure is always under doubt. Some aid is required to enhance the vision of the doctor in such surgeries. Navigation systems are the best fit for such situations. These systems provide an enhanced view for the doctor in minimally invasive surgeries. There are a variety of systems available that help doctors in spinal screw fixation, pelvis surgeries, and brain surgeries. Navigation systems not only enhance the accuracy of the procedure, but they also save a lot of time of the doctor. The overall accuracy and throughput both improve with the latest navigation systems.

Thus, this would not only add value to the customer satisfaction through better care at affordable cost, but would also generate better revenues in the long run for the healthcare facilities.

The mobile X-ray equipment is witnessing a huge demand for itself. The major evolving trend that has happened in the segment of mobile DR systems, which due to its onsite evaluation has emerged as a boon for the ICU, trauma, emergency and bedside X-rays in wards. Even during this on-going pandemic, these mobile wonders have given amazing results as this has increased patient throughput on one hand and provided much faster results on the other, thus in the process, streamlining critical imaging departments in the hospitals.

Mammography imaging has improved a lot with smaller-pixel-sized FPDs. More diagnostic value and minimum human errors in image processing has improved the level and accuracy of diagnosis. Further to add, dynamic FPD in mammography has given a power tool in terms of 3D tomosynthesis.

Computers and Internet are playing a vital role. Modern technology has also revolutionized the domain of medical product development. 3D printing and simulation software have made the development cycle considerably shorter and less expensive. Time-to-market has been reduced a lot with such technologies. At the same time, new materials like carbon nanotubes, carbon composites, and graphene have made medical equipment stronger and lighter by replacing the conventional metals. Wearable technologies, flexible displays, miniature sensors, and IoT-based devices have added new dimensions to the medical equipment in terms of lighter weight, robustness, patient comfort, and ease to use.

Thus, positive impact of the emerging technologies on the healthcare canvas is very fast.
