Quik-Check Plus from Peerless Biotech Pvt. Ltd.

Anemia is defined as a decreased concentration of blood hemoglobin. It is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen-carrying capacity is insufficient to meet the body’s physiological requirements, which vary by age, sex, altitude, smoking habits, and during pregnancy. Its prevalence is inordinately higher among developing nations because of low socioeconomic status and indigent access to healthcare services.

Anemia affects an estimated 2.36 billion individuals globally, especially women and children. The prevalence of anemia is estimated to be higher in India when compared to all other developing countries. Also, it is the second leading cause of maternal deaths in the country. According to the National Family Health Survey 4 (NFHS-4), 58.4 percent of children aged 6–59 months, 53.1 percent of non-pregnant women aged 15–49 years, 50.3 percent of pregnant women aged 15–49 years, 53 percent of all women aged 15–49 years, 22.7 percent of men aged 15–49 years, 54 percent of adolescent girls, and 29 percent of adolescent boys were anemic in India.

The Ministry of Health And Family, Government of India, started an Anemia Mukt Bharat campaign in the month of September 2018, named as Poshan Maah 2018, with the aim to reduce the prevalence of anemia in India.

There are various methods available for detecting hemoglobin, a vital parameter to screen anemia. These methods can be broadly classified into invasive and non-invasive.

Invasive methods. Sahli’s method (the most popular manual method being performed in the laboratory), copper sulphate method, Hb color scale method, and methemoglobin method (recently used method for detecting hemoglobin level).

Non-invasive methods. Occlusion spectroscopy, pulse-cooximetry, and transcutaneous spectroscopy

Apart from the above, hemoglobin can be detected using hematology analyzers along with WBC, RBC, and platelets. But, the point-of-care hemoglobin meters prove to be an attractive solution to improve timely diagnosis of anemia in resource-limited settings.
