Heal The World

Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) was established with a view to providing comprehensive services for spinal cord injuries and all related specialties i.e. spine, neurosurgery, orthopedics, neurology, urology, pulmonology, general surgery, and rehabilitation. The philosophy of ISIC is to provide high-quality treatment with complete patient safety and satisfaction, improving outcomes and adding quality to life. One of the unique features of this institute is that it has a totally barrier-free environment.

ISIC is a non-profit organization. It is an extremely modern, ultra-efficient hospital. The center aims to reach and improve the quality of life for a large number of newly spinal injured individuals day in and day out by rendering quality services accessible to all. The philosophy and guiding principle of the center is not to deprive anyone of the medical treatment due to a dearth of funds. This is a hospital with a heart and soul—a place that aims to provide world-class standards personalized health care and helps its patients feel the joy of living through. Though built with Italian collaboration, it is really the result of one man’s vision. A soldier, a mountaineer, a dreamer, an administrator, and a tetra-paraplegic – Major HPS Ahluwalia, chairman, ISIC, is all this and much more. Major HPS Ahluwalia is an Everest conqueror, a war hero, ex-chairman of Rehabilitation Council of India and is also the chairman and the prime motivator behind ISIC. It was a gunshot in 1965 Indo-Pak war that left Major Ahluwalia paralyzed. Since hardly any facilities existed in India at the time, Major Ahluwalia was sent to UK for rehabilitation. He made up his mind then and there to make his contribution to his motherland by establishing world standard treatment-cum-rehabilitation for spinal injuries and other disabilities in general in India. Thus, started the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, an idea that blossomed and has now taken concrete shape.

Besides conventional methods of treating illness, ISIC has also developed alternative and holistic methods of rehabilitating its patients. Allotment of additional 2.68 acres of land has given an opportunity for expansion. The services to be developed include neurosciences, urology, chest medicine and pulmonology, general surgery and GI surgery, musculoskeletal and neurospine-oncology, medical, surgical and radiation oncology, education, and research. The proposed specialties will have state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and infrastructure along with super-specialized clinical teams and technical staff. Our clinician has been constantly innovating and improving surgical techniques, clinical quality and aim to produce researched studies published in journals. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy along with family counseling works wonder for the entire rehabilitation process, which also increases physical, psychological, occupational, and vocational rehabilitation of the patient.

This year we will upgrade our MRI machine and technology in radiology which will further enhance our strength in dealing with patient diagnostics. We will also procure equipment for the neuroscience department. We will upgrade our CSSD with new state of art sterilizers to support our operation theatre. We will also explore the possibility of various robotic-assisted ortho-surgeries for precision and better outcomes. We plan to buy new hospital beds for our new facilities along with medical furniture with an aim to provide safety and quality in patient care. MoU has been signed with National Institute of Immunology and ISIC to strengthen basic research in the field of stem cell and tissue engineering. MoU has also been signed with the Canadian government for an exchange program in basic research.

ISIC is achieving its social goals by collaborating with different agencies and NGOs and thus providing health services to society at large. Our aim is to restore hope and joy in the heart of every patient with unrelenting attention to clinical excellence, patient safety and an unparalleled dedication to assure exemplary physical, emotional, and spiritual care.
