Medical Refrigerators: Changing the Way of Cooling

Despite the rampant progress that India has witnessed, the medical cold chain is one vital piece that has been ignored. Millions of temperature sensitive supplies, such as blood and vaccines, have been discarded due to improper storage or management practices. Over 28 lakh units of blood have been discarded by hospitals and blood banks in India over the past five years, of which seven lakh units have been discarded over the past year alone. Not only in the states that witness heavy load shedding but Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu were severe offenders. Effective immunization is another avenue that continues to be a major challenge. The WHO reports vaccine wastage around the world as much as 70–100 percent!

Godrej Medical Refrigerators are specialized refrigerators designed specially to address the key need of providing precise cooling for temperature sensitive lifesaving supplies like vaccines, blood, insulin, and lab reagents. Service reliability and spares availability is a major issue leading to an inoperative cold chain. The Godrej Smartcare service promise assumes critical importance here and is committed to 48 hour call closures in urban centers and 72 hours in rural centers. Backed by the assurance of 95 percent spares availability, wide service network, and supported by the longest holdover time in the product, this translates into reassuring always on performance and no fear of wastage.

The Revolutionary Sure Chill Technology

The Godrej Medical Refrigerators are powered by the Sure Chill technology, developed in the UK, a unique cooling technology that ensures perfect temperature control with no risk of freezing.

This technology requires only 2.5 hours of power supply to sustain the thermal ice reservoir which allows the contents of the refrigerator to remain cool thereafter, even without power supply. During its normal use, to remove or store the medical supplies, the storage chamber might witness an ingress of ambient air which could lead to a temperature rise. This rise in temperature is quickly absorbed by the cold walls to maintain chamber temperature within the 4 degrees Celsius band. The water within the contained tank, warms up, rises and comes in contact with the thermal ice bank. Heat exchange occurs to normalize water temperature back to 4 degrees Celsius. This cycle continues till the time when the thermal ice bank depletes – which is considered as the hold over period. Sure chill technology provides options of medium holdover (3 – 4 days) in some models to long holdover (over 7 – 13 days), measured at ambient of 43 degrees Celsius. The technology completely eliminates the risk of freezing as it is indirect water cooling and not the conventional thermostat controlled defrosting refrigerator.

Specifically Catered to Under Developed and Developing Countries

The long holdover series of Godrej medical refrigerators cater to rural areas in developing countries, where power is erratic or nonexistent. A holdover of over 7–13 days provides sufficient time to address any quality issues without affecting the critical medical supplies.

The Lite Series of Godrej medical refrigerators cater to peri-urban and urban areas in developing countries. A holdover of three days is adequate to address power outages and quality issues without affecting the stored life stock. The reduction in holdover also enables the product to be offered at around 50 percent of the cost of the longhold over series models. This brings the technology within the affordable reach of developing countries.

These are are upright refrigerators, taking up minimal floor space and offer a much higher gross to net storage utilization. They come with options of solar temperature readers, 30-day temperature data loggers, which can be downloaded through USB and remote monitoring data loggers, which can be accessed through a cloud server.
