Population ageing is one of the most discussed global phenomena in the present century. Countries with a large population like India have a large number of people now aged 60 years or more. The population over the age of 60 years has tripled in last 50 years in India and will relentlessly increase in the near future.
The increases in the elderly population are the result of changing fertility and mortality regimes over the last 40–50 years. The aging process is considered to be an end product of demographic transition or demographic achievement with a decline in both birth and mortality rates and consequent increase in life expectancy at birth and older ages.
Irrespective of socioeconomic status, the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) requiring large quantum of health and social care are extremely common in old age as a result of changing lifestyle. There is a global movement to support continued participation by older adults and population groups in social, economic, spiritual, and cultural events, with the goal of enhancing quality and extending healthy life expectancy.
Medical discipline focuses on the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of a patient. The goal is to achieve the best quality of life by relieving suffering and controlling pain and symptoms. Hospitals or nursing homes are no longer the only options. In the months and years to come, the home healthcare industry will become the de facto solution for many as our aging population requires more care.
In view of the large cases of locomotive disability amongst the elderly, government could consider incentivizing the families that care for the elderly at home by providing – tax incentives and partial financing of nursing services.
