Set up Fertility Centers in Hospitals: PIL

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Madurai bench of the Madras high court seeking the court to issue directions to the health and family welfare department to set up fertility centers in government hospitals across the state. The petitioner stated that private fertility clinics are charging several lakhs for treatment and the absence of such centers would deprive childless couples from economically weak sections. The petitioner, A Veronica Mary of Madurai, stated that she visited Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai after her friend, a college professor, could not arrange the funds demanded by a private fertility center. She said that she was shocked to learn that there was no fertility center in the multi-crore hospital. – TOI
