Swine Flu on Decline: Delhi Hospitals

Swine flu cases are finally coming down. City hospitals have reported a significant decline in patients over the last week and said with the rise in temperature, the disease outbreak is likely to ebb further. This year, 3,134 people were confirmed positive for swine flu in Delhi, while there have been seven deaths due to the disease. The latest data released by National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) as on March 3 shows that 530 deaths occurred due to swine flu and 17,366 people were affected across the country this year. Rajasthan remains the worst-affected state, followed by Gujarat and Delhi. “There is nearly 30 percent reduction in swine flu cases over the past week. We hope that in the next 10 to 15 days, the cases will come down further,” said Dr Rommel Tickkoo, associate director, internal medicine at Max Saket.

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to other viral illnesses. It is self-limiting in most cases. However, this year mortality and morbidity rates have been higher in certain areas probably due to a change in strain of the virus, doctors said. Also, most deaths involved immune-compromised patients, particularly elderly people. “Patients often rush to the hospital with severe symptoms, such as respiratory distress and organ damage, which increases the risk of mortality,” said a doctor at Safdarjung Hospital. Doctors at Lok Nayak hospital said the patient rush has come down significantly over the past few days. “But people should not drop their guard. Maintaining hand hygiene is one of the best preventive measures against swine flu,” said a doctor. – TOI
