Telemedicine assisted by AI can improve healthcare outcomes

Telemedicine is the use of technology to provide healthcare services and information remotely without requiring physical proximity between patients and healthcare providers. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into telemedicine can enhance and expand its capabilities in addressing various healthcare needs, such as patient monitoring, healthcare information technology (IT), intelligent diagnosis, and assistance.

Despite the potential benefits, implementing AI in telemedicine presents challenges that can be overcome with physician-guided implementation. In a paper titled “Addressing the challenges of AI-based telemedicine: Best practices and lessons learned”, researchers from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indrashil University, Gujarat, and Gujarat Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Ahmedabad, has identified the role of AI in addressing the challenges of telemedicine in India.

The study states that AI can assist physicians in decision-making, improve healthcare delivery, and automate administrative tasks. To ensure optimal effectiveness, AI-powered telemedicine should comply with existing clinical practices and adhere to a framework adaptable to various technologies. It should also consider technical and scientific factors, including trustworthiness, reproducibility, usability, availability, and cost. Education and training are crucial for appropriately using new healthcare technologies such as AI-enabled telemedicine.

Telemedicine assisted by AI can improve the patient experience, healthcare outcomes, and the quality of services offered by physicians. By speeding up disease screening and diagnosis, making diagnoses more precise and personalised, and decreasing the necessity for in-person consultations, AI can play an important role in promoting and facilitating access to integrated health care throughout a person’s lifespan. In managing chronic diseases, AI-enabled remote care can enhance communication and connections across various healthcare delivery elements, enabling healthcare professionals to interact and provide a knowledge repository for managing patients.

Synergy of Telemedicine and AI
Tele-ICU, or telemedicine in intensive care units, refers to the exchange of health information from one hospital’s critical care unit to another via electronic communications. Tele-ICU allows intensivists to monitor and manage critically ill patients in multiple locations simultaneously.

The potential of AI to enhance the capabilities of tele-ICU is considerable, as it can provide real-time analysis of patient data and aid in scientific decision-making. AI programs can be trained to identify patient data patterns and provide alerts when a patient’s condition deviates from expected norms. This can help clinicians intervene earlier and prevent adverse events. In addition to real-time monitoring, AI can predict patient outcomes and allocate resources.

Importance of responsible AI models
Responsible AI can play an important role in enhancing patient engagement in telemedicine. It can provide personalised guidance and recommendations tailored to individuals’ unique needs and circumstances. One of the primary challenges patients face when considering telemedicine is understanding when and how to use it effectively.

While evaluating potential AI stakeholders, it is crucial for healthcare enterprises to look for companies that have a proven history of success in implementing AI solutions across a wide range of healthcare workflows. A key aspect of responsible AI is clinical validation. Healthcare organisations should prioritise partnering with companies that have invested in testing, analysing and validating their AI algorithms through third-party studies. This will ensure that the AI models implemented are safe, effective and dependable and can demonstrate measurable improvements in care quality, patient outcomes and financial performance.

Telemedicine in India
Telemedicine, or the delivery of healthcare services through electronic communication, has gained significant attention in India in recent years. The country’s vast geographic area, coupled with a shortage of healthcare professionals, has made telemedicine an essential tool to provide timely and accessible healthcare services to its population.

Telemedicine has evolved significantly and has become an integral part of the country’s healthcare system. One of the significant benefits of telemedicine in India is the ability to provide healthcare services to underserved areas where healthcare infrastructure is inadequate or non-existent. It has also proven helpful in improving access to healthcare services for the elderly, disabled, and those living in remote locations.

Telemedicine has also played a vital role in reducing the burden on urban healthcare facilities, where many patients are treated daily. By providing remote consultations and follow-up services, telemedicine has helped reduce the number of patients requiring physical visits to hospitals and clinics, thus saving time and resources.

Incorporating AI models into telemedicine has undoubtedly enhanced its overall scope. It will aid in tackling numerous healthcare challenges in India. Ensuring that the responsible AI norms are embedded in this system will take India’s healthcare system to the next level. INDIAai
