WHO lauds country’s COVID-19 response

he World Health Organisation (WHO), on Wednesday, lauded India over its handling of coronavirus situation and said that the country is responding “with utmost urgency” to COVID-19 from the beginning.

Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director, South-East Asia further said that India has been regularly strengthening its preparedness and response measures to tackle the crisis.

“India is responding with utmost urgency to COVID-19 from start. It’s been continually strengthening preparedness and response measures, including ramping up testing capacities, readying more hospitals, arranging and stocking up medicines and essentials,” she said.

“We’re aware of varying capacities at sub-national levels. Not unusual in country as big as India&its population size,that measures taken may often not be uniformly sufficient across all areas. Scaling up capacities&response remains constant need in India,” said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh.

The WHO official also stressed that scaling up capacities and response remains a constant need in India.

COVID-19 recoveries on the rise in India
In what may be a glimmer of hope for India, which has been witnessing a spike in the coronavirus cases, the recoveries are also on the rise parallelly.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in the daily COVID-19 update on Wednesday that India recorded a total of 28,472 recoveries (the number of patients cured and discharged) 37,724 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

According to the ministry, over 7.5 lakh COVID-19 patients (7,53,049) have recovered in the country so far. The total number of cases in the country at present stand at 11,92,915, with 4,11,133 active cases.

“Recovery rate has crossed 63% overall, with 19 States/UTs registering higher than 63.13% recovery rate,” the ministry stated.

The country has also scape up its testing rate. The ICMR has said that a cumulative total of 1,47,24,546 tests have been conducted in the country till July 21 and as many as 3,43,243 samples were tested on Tuesday alone. – Times Now News
