Facilities at Lady Goschen Hospital to improve further

Mangaluru: The maternity medical facilities are improving at a marked pace at the Government Lady Goschen Hospital, which until a few years ago was in dire need of infrastructure, bringing them at par with the facilities at private hospitals. Now, a High-Risk Pregnancy ward and Maternity and Child Health (MCH) department are all ready to be added to the list of facilities.

When the hospital was operating at the old building, there was no space for an ICU. The critical maternity-related cases were referred to Wenlock Hospital or other private hospitals.

After the new building sponsored by MRPL was built, 4 ICU beds with ventilator facilities began functioning. Now the ward has been upgraded with modern equipment to cater to High-Risk Pregnancy cases, hospital authorities said.

Facilities at the ward
The High-Risk Pregnancy ward is completed with 4 ICU beds, 7 high dependency units complete with the hydraulic cots required for it, 11 monitors, a computerized system for detecting mother’s uterus and baby’s conditions, 11 autoclave machines, and 15 computers. The cost of Rs 48 lakhs, required for the equipment, was borne by the Rotary organization, the authorities added.

Moreover, the new Department of MCH has a capacity of 60 beds, complete with OPD, consultancy rooms, wards, etc.

The new High-Risk Pregnancy Ward and the MCH Department are slated to be inaugurated in the month of December, said Medical Superintendent Dr Durga Prasad.

Future plans:
In complicated obstetric cases, there are chances of Kidney damage, which may require dialysis. At present, the there are no dialysis machines at the hospital and cases are referred to the dialysis unit at Wenlock Hospital. Efforts are underway to start a dialysis unit at the hospital, Dr Durga Prasad said. Udayavani
