Fujifilm’s AI-based lung disease diagnostic device wins approval in Japan

Lunit said Thursday that the medical artificial intelligence company and global medical device maker, Fujifilm, have co-developed an AI-based chest X-ray analysis system and won approval from Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA).

The company said that the newly certified product would be introduced to the Japanese consumers with the name of CXR-AID,” the company said.

It is an artificial intelligence (AI) based X-ray analysis system that utilizes ‘Lunit INSIGHT CXR’ as its core technology. Lunit INSIGHT CXR is an AI software of Lunit that supports lung disease screening. Lunit’s AI will be installed in Fujifilm’s x-ray device and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

As one of the top five companies in the global medical device market share, Fujifilm is the largest provider of diagnostic imaging in Japan, rating the first in Japan’s x-ray market share.

“As Lunit is an AI software developer based on the technology. Hence, expanding the market share through the cooperation with global medical device companies is one of the most important strategies,” said Beomseok Brandon Suh, the CEO of Lunit.

Through cooperation with the global partner Fujifilm, Lunit could present its AI technology to medical professionals worldwide. Therefore, we are happy to offer our AI solution to Japan’s medical fields through its added approval.

“Clients highly acknowledge Lunit’s AI solution for its high accuracy and technology,” said Naoya Yamakawa, manager of Global Business Development at Fujifilm Medical Systems. KBR
