Goa Cabinet gives clearance to set up private medical college in Margao

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday announced that the state cabinet has approved the establishment of a private medical college on a 10,000 square meter land near the South Goa District Hospital in Margao. The private medical college, slated to commence operations by June 2025, will be facilitated through a transparent process of inviting Requests for Quotes (RFQs) to select the operator. The land, belonging to GSUDA, will be allocated to the private entity responsible for setting up the institute.

Despite being a private venture, the college will operate under the administrative control of a trust, with the Chief Minister serving as its head. Additionally, the trust will include members from various political backgrounds, including the Leader of Opposition and representatives from all parties, ensuring a broad spectrum of oversight and governance.

Chief Minister Sawant highlighted that this model aligns with the guidelines provided by NITI Aayog, emphasizing transparency and accountability in the management of the institution. He clarified that the government will not invest in the infrastructure of the college, indicating a reliance on private investment for its development.

Importantly, the Chief Minister assured that quotas will be reserved for Goan students in the college, ensuring access to quality medical education for local residents. This move is expected to not only address the shortage of medical seats in the state but also contribute to the overall enhancement of healthcare services in the region. Herald Goa
