IVF success rate in India stands at 40%

Dr Sulbha Arora, Clinical Director, Nova IVF Fertility, Mumbai said that the answer lies in several key factors such as age, underlying cause of infertility, and lifestyle choices that greatly influence outcomes on the initial attempt.

The expert said, “There is a striking trend favoring women under 35 who stand at peak odds of achieving pregnancy during their first IVF cycle. This exceptional achievement is based on younger women’s abundant supply of high-quality eggs compared to their older counterparts.”

However, as age progresses beyond this threshold so does the likelihood of experiencing diminished success rates throughout subsequent cycles: between ages 35-37 using one’s own eggs it corresponds to approximately 35-40 per cent success rate, while women over 38 face a further decline to about 30 per cent or lower.

She added, “After 40, the odds plummet significantly to less than 10 per cent during the initial IVF cycle. This sharp descent primarily stems from both diminished egg quality and quantity available for fertilisation.”

Furthermore, the number of embryos transferred serves as a critical determinant in IVF treatment success rates. Although transferring multiple embryos may heighten pregnancy prospects, it simultaneously elevates the risks associated with multiple pregnancies posing potential hazards to both mother and babies alike. The outcome of IVF treatment depends greatly on how many embryos are transferred.

India’s IVF treatments
When talking about India, the average success rate for IVF stands at approximately 35-40 per cent, aligning with worldwide averages. Nevertheless, these rates can fluctuate significantly across different clinics and regions due to disparities in technology, expertise levels, and patient populations.

It’s worth noting that while IVF presents a hopeful solution for infertility issues, it does not ensure a 100 per cent success rate during the initial cycle. Hence, it is vital for couples contemplating this procedure to manage their expectations and grasp the multifaceted aspects associated with IVF success rates.

Factors influencing the effectiveness of IVF
Age is an important factor in determining the success rate of IVF. Women below 35 tend to have higher success rates due to the quality and quantity of their eggs.

Dr Arora said, “As women age, the likelihood of successful IVF goes down. It is the need of the hour to take this into consideration when discussing your prospects with your IVF specialist. Certain conditions, such as endometriosis or male factor infertility, may require specialised treatment approaches that can affect success rates.”

Previous unsuccessful attempts at IVF may affect the success rate of subsequent cycles. However, it is important to note that each IVF cycle is unique, and past failures do not necessarily predict future outcomes.
