Lok Sabha Elections 2019: How Healthcare Has Progressed In Five Years Of Modi Government

CNBC-TV18’s series – Election and Market – analyzes how the BJP government has performed in various key sectors of the economy.

H Sudarshan Ballal, chairman of Manipal Hospitals; Kewal Handa, former MD of Pfizer & industry expert; and Naresh Trehan, CMD of Medanta look at the health and pharma sector and how it has performed over the last 5 years.

“It has been an exciting and challenging period for the healthcare industry with a lot of headwinds in the last year or two,” Ballal said on Wednesday.

“Healthcare in India, for the first time I feel, is recognized as a fundamental right and after a long time the government and everyone is talking about healthcare as a major issue for this country,” he added.

Former MD of Pfizer, Kewal Handa, “Healthcare sector has been short-changed in the past 5 years. I would give the government 3/10 for the performance in the health care sector.”

“A lot of the initiatives that they have started on various fronts including upgrading the primary centres, hygiene part in schools etc. these are the ones they should seriously take it up,” he added.

Medanta’s Trehan said healthcare has taken huge strides in the last decade or so.

According to him, “The highest end of medicine has been delivered in metros and there is a falloff for B and C cities and the villages.”-cnbc tv 18
