Medical college to be set up In Chennai’s Egmore

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that he will be traveling to New Delhi in the first week of September to meet Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for seeking the Centre’s permission for setting up new medical colleges in six districts of the state. The Minister also said that a medical or paramedical college will be built near the Institute of Child Health in Egmore.

Addressing the reporters after inaugurating the 61st anniversary of Madras Dental College in Parrys, the Minister said, “The government has a policy to start medical colleges in each and every district of Tamil Nadu. So, I will meet the Union Minister and seek the Centre’s nod for starting colleges in six districts including Perambalur, Tenkasi, Mayiladuthurai, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Kanchipuram.”

The construction of the new dental college in Pudukottai is also nearing completion so the state will seek permission for starting admission to the college next year, the Minister, as per a report on Times of India.

The dental college in Pudukottai will be the third state-run dental college in the state, he said.

Talking about the plans to start a new nursing college in Trichy, Ma Subramanian said that the state is planning to add more nursing colleges since there are several private players offering the same.

Tamil Nadu already has several state-run medical colleges. In January 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 11 new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu constructed under the centrally sponsored scheme of establishing new medical colleges attached to existing district hospitals.

The 11 new medical colleges were set up in Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Tiruppur, Thiruvallur, Virudhunagar, Namakkal, The Nilgiris, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri.

The medical colleges were set up at the cost of Rs 4,000 crore with funds from both the Centre and Tamil Nadu. The central government provided Rs 2,145 crore while the state funded the remaining amount. ABP News
