Researchers trialing magnetic needles to improve bone biopsy procedures

Bone biopsy devices play a crucial role in obtaining tissue samples from bone or vertebral bodies for diagnostic purposes.

These devices are designed to facilitate the removal of small bone samples for examination, aiding in the early detection and diagnosis of diseases such as cancer.

In recent years, there have been several advancements in bone biopsy technology, including the development of innovative devices and improvements in tissue sampling techniques.

The adoption of newer technologies in the bone biopsy devices market, including automatic biopsy guns, has propelled market growth.

These bone biopsy instruments are capable of delivering cleaner and sufficient tissue samples for more accurate analysis, thus providing more reliable diagnostics.

According to leading data analytics company GlobalData‘s Premium SKU products, sales of the BD Trek bone biopsy kit in the US increased more than 139% from June to October 2023, and growth remains robust to date.

The number of healthcare facilities that utilise the device has tripled in the same period. Its single-use core needles can be only used with the BD Trek power driver, which provides variable speeds with an LED indicator to allow precise control for different needs.

Other sector improvements include vacuum-assisted biopsy devices, ultrasound-guided bone marrow biopsy devices, and magnetic needles.

US-based OmniBone received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2023 for its bone biopsy kit with power driver, designed for bone biopsy using cutting or aspiration techniques.

Additionally, companies such as BiBBInstruments are aiming to offer endoscopic ultrasound-guided core needle biopsies as an alternative to fine needle aspiration and fine needle biopsy techniques.

Furthermore, researchers at Johns Hopkins University are exploring the use of magnetic needles that can access hard-to-reach areas of the body for biopsy sampling.

These magnetic needles could potentially make procedures safer and more effective.

As technology continues to advance, bone biopsy devices are expected to play an increasingly important role in improving the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions, including cancer, orthopaedic disorders, and other bone-related diseases. Medical Device Network
