RIMS director inaugurates Cryostat

Professor A Santa Singh, Director of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS),  inaugurated Cryostat (Frozen Section) and Automatic IHC Stainer (Ventana) at the Department of Pathology, RIMS today.

With this inauguration, the Department of Pathology, RIMS has achieved a milestone for cancer treatment under the leadership of Professor A Santa Singh, said a press release by the Media Advisor, RIMS. The Director stated that the Cryostat machine will immensely help surgeons during oncosurgery (cancer surgery). “This machine will enable us to give an intraoperative report for clearance of cancer margin within a few minutes. Also it will help the Nephrology and Dermatology Department for Immunofluorescence study during full work up of the patients” he added.

It may be noted that the Ventana Automatic Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Stainer is a state of art instrument at par with the highest oncology centres in the country for molecular diagnosis of cancer. The instrument has standardized Immunohistochemistry as compared to manual methods being used at present. Immunohistochemistry will help in diagnosis and sub typing of many malignancies.

It is worth mentioning that the equipments were procured under the DIAMONDS project (under NCDIR- ICMR).

The institute is providing free molecular tests for breast and lung cancer. Such tests will immensely help in cancer care for targeted therapy. The project will also be expanded by adding molecular testing of two more cancers namely Colorectal Cancer and Endometrial Carcinoma very shortly. The inaugural function was also attended by Professor N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, Professor Sushma Khuraijam, Head of Department of Pathology, RIMS and other faculty members, added the release.
