Staff crisis at Faridabad Civil Hospital, services hit

The Bhadshah Khan Civil Hospital in the district is one of the largest government hospitals in the state, yet it is facing a severe staff crunch. The hospital tends to over 2,200 patients in the OPD daily.

“With Emergency or Casualty OPD having only three doctors against the requirement of 12, services have been badly hit. Around 400 patients report at the Casualty OPD daily, but a lot of times are referred elsewhere due to unavailability of specialist doctors or treatment,” said a hospital employee.

According to official data, the hospital has 48 doctors posted against the sanctioned posts of 55.

The crunch of doctors of medicine, paediatrics, anaesthesia and Medical Officers in the Casualty is affecting the hospital’s functioning.

A recent RTI reply revealed that 56 per cent of the posts of doctors and nursing staff is vacant. Besides, there is a crunch of technical staff such as pharmacists, operation theatre attendants and technicians.

Meanwhile, the special 96-bed hospital, set up last year for Covid patients, has failed to get the required staff despite a rise in the number of active cases in the past week.

This hospital requires a staff of around 200, which include 30 doctors, 40 nursing officers, 15 technical officers and 35 assistants.

“While the bed strength of the hospital has remained at 200 for over two decades, the number of beds in Emergency is only 18,” Satish Chopra, a social activist, said.
