What is XR in healthcare

xtended reality (XR) is a broad category that encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). A recent white paper highlights the potential of XR in training healthcare professionals, particularly nurses.

Traditionally, VR has been the primary focus when it comes to digital technology in healthcare training. However, XR offers a wider range of possibilities that go beyond VR alone. With the inclusion of AR and MR, XR opens up new avenues for training providers, which is especially crucial in the face of ongoing labor shortages in senior living and care facilities.

According to a study conducted among healthcare professionals, over 90% agreed that XR tools enhance educational programs, while 75% believed that these technologies enable trainees to complete their programs in a shorter time. Even among organizations that have not yet adopted XR, a significant 86% expressed their intention to incorporate such training options by 2026.

While the white paper mainly focuses on healthcare as a whole, it does hint at the relevance of XR in long-term care. As the population ages rapidly, there is an increasing need to ensure that adequate healthcare services are available to meet their needs. XR can play a crucial role in preparing healthcare professionals for the challenges they may face in caring for the elderly.

The white paper discusses the findings of an interview conducted by the HTC VIVE team, who spoke with over 400 healthcare professionals to evaluate their opinions and adoption of XR technologies. Despite the widespread support demonstrated in the statistics, there is still some skepticism towards new technology. Pearly Chen, HTC VIVE’s Vice President of Business Development and Partnerships, acknowledges this sentiment but emphasizes that XR is not just a gaming tool. It represents the next evolution in digital interaction, with significant potential for enhancing various aspects of our lives.

In conclusion, the integration of XR in healthcare training has the potential to revolutionize the way healthcare professionals learn and prepare for their roles. With the majority of professionals recognizing the benefits of XR tools, the future holds promising opportunities for improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare education and practice.
