Wipro developing sophisticated language models for health sector

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman’s recent India visit seems to have stirred the pot. He was widely criticized for not mincing words about India’s contribution and prospects in the domain of artificial intelligence. A sane few however relate to Sam’s perspective, which the techpreneur later remarked as blown out of proportion, taken out of context, and that he didn’t mean no disrespect. It is competition anyway. No? Sam’s ‘hopeless’ remark was taken up as a challenge by Tech Mahindra CEO who pledged to create a similar homegrown AI tool. In its recent annual report Indian tech giant, Wipro has revealed that it has been working on Generative AI for close to two years now. It comes on the heels of other IT giants in India including TCS, Infosys, HCL, Tech Mahindra and others, who have lapped up AI. Wipro states that it has been working on development of sophisticated language models for the health sector. The research program going on for the last two years is in collaboration with IIT Patna and University of South Carolina.

Rishad Premji, the Chairman of Wipro, in the letter addressed to the stakeholders remarked that FY22-23 has been a pivotal year for tech companies globally. He stated that the company’s Generative AI Centre of Excellence has been researching in collaboration with premier academic institutions. The Wipiro AI Academy has built WeGA (Wipro Enterprise Generative AI) that has executed critical pilot programs for its esteemed clients like Microsoft.

In May 2023, Wipro expanded its Google Cloud partnership to provide its generative AI capabilities to clienteles across the globe. It also integrates the full suite of AI tools embedded in the Google Cloud including Model Garden, AI App Builder, and Vertex AI. Wipro is also training 20,000 associates on Google Cloud’s generative AI technology. Mashable India
