Assam: Medical college well equipped to handle surge in COVID-19 cases

The Assam Medical College and Hospital in Assam’s Dibrugarh is fully equipped to handle the surge of Covid-19 patients, said hospital authorities.

Addressing a press conference at the AMCH conference Hall premises on Monday, AMCH principal Sanjeeb Kakati said AMCH is well prepared to handle the surge in Covid-19 cases in the Upper Assam districts.

“Last year we witnessed the ugly side of Covid-19. This time we are preparing to control the burden of patients at AMCH,” the principal said.

The principal said that till date 4,224 Covid-19 patients have been treated at the medical college while the current number of active cases stands at 19 with nine mild cases and another 10 others being kept under observation.

He said that two liquid oxygen cylinders have been connected to the dedicated Covid-19 intensive care unit at the medical college to meet the demand for oxygen.

Work on an oxygen generation plant is going on in the medical college campus with a capacity to fill 50 cylinders per day.

“We are also trying to increase the intake capacity of the casualty department by adding 80 more beds to the present capacity of 10-12 beds,” said Kakati.

The Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited has committed an amount of Rs 1.5 crore for the ambitious project.

Similarly, Oil India Limited has pledged an amount of Rs 10 crore for the construction of 60 paying cabins in the medical college, which will gradually be increased to 100.

He further mentioned that a fully equipped sophisticated medical van for patients suffering from stroke will be introduced at the medical college, which will be staffed by qualified nurse and radio technicians.

The van will provide first aid and preliminary treatment to patients who suffer from strokes. Northeast Now
