Contract Medical Manufacturer to invest $6M in Michigan expansion

A manufacturer of devices for leading medical and pharmaceutical companies plans to expand its operations in western Michigan, state and company officials announced.

West Contract Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Pennsylvania-based West Pharmaceutical Services, will invest $6 million to upgrade its building and add new machinery and equipment in the Grand Rapids suburb of Walker.

“We are pleased to continue our growth in Walker, Michigan, which will help support our mission of improving patient lives around the globe,” Brian Meines, the facility’s site director, said in a statement. “I’m proud of our team members and the work they do to support our mission.”

West designs and manufactures advanced containment and delivery systems for injectable medicines used by companies in the pharmaceutical, medical device, biologic, and generic drug sectors. The project is expected to add 110 jobs to the facility’s current payroll of 266 workers.

The company is slated to receive a $500,000 state grant to support the project.

“The decision to expand in our region reaffirms the strength of Greater Grand Rapids’ rapidly advancing health science industry,” said Randy Thelen, the president and CEO of regional economic development group The Right Place Inc. “West Contract Manufacturing has played an integral role in our local medical device manufacturing industry, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth in our community as they create high-tech, quality jobs.” ThomasNet
