Global cystoscope market to exceed $2 billion by 2033

With May being Bladder Cancer Awareness Month in Canada, there is a renewed public awareness and attention towards this deadly disease and how it is screened, diagnosed, and treated. A critical component in this process is the use of cystoscopes to confirm suspected cases of colorectal cancer and the global market for which is forecast by GlobalData to double from $1.0 billion in 2022 to $2.1 billion by 2033.

The leading data and analytics company notes that this growth is primarily driven by the increasing number of aging patients presenting symptoms of bladder cancer, thereby requiring tests and visualization of the bladder via cystoscopies.

Brian Hicks, Senior Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “A patient may be suspected of having bladder cancer when abnormal symptoms related to urination present themselves, which typically include hematuria (blood in the urine), pain or burning sensations, and increased frequency. One of the ways to screen for bladder cancer is by cystoscopy, a procedure in which a type of endoscope called cystoscope is inserted through the urethra and into the bladder to visualize and check for any abnormal growth. Suspected areas are then sampled via biopsies to provide a definitive diagnosis of the indication.”

As for the market leaders in colonoscopes, they are comprised of a mix of large global medical device manufacturers, namely Olympus, Hoya (Pentax), Karl Storz, and Stryker. However, this list may change by the end of the decade, as Ambu, a Danish company that pioneered single-use endoscopes, has already launched the world’s first single-use cystoscope.

Hicks adds: “As single-use cystoscopes not only help in eliminating the risk of cross-contamination but also potentially lower the cost per procedure, more companies will likely invest in their research and development (R&D) to manufacture their own single-use cystoscopes, but Ambu will enjoy a head start in penetrating this segment of the market.” GlobalData
