India enrolls 55 crore people under Ayushman Bharat

As the Narendra Modi Government has completed nine years in office, Akashvani News brings a series of special stories on the initiatives taken by the government. Today we have a look at Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojna which benefits more than 12 crore families.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018 launched the world’s largest health insurance scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, from Ranchi in Jharkhand.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or PM-JAY under Ayushman Bharat provides cashless health cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for hospitalization to more than 12 crore poor and vulnerable families comprising about 55 crore beneficiaries. The families covered under this scheme have been included on the basis of occupational criteria of Socio-Economic Caste Census 2011 – SECC 2011. PM-JAY also included the beneficiaries of the then existing Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, which were not present in the SECC 2011 database. Free treatment of 1300 diseases including serious diseases like cancer and heart disease is possible under this scheme in public and private empaneled hospitals in India.

So far more than four crore people have got their treatment done under this scheme. The objective of PM-JAY is to help reduce the expenditure on medical treatment of the poor. NewsOnAir
