Initiatives by Ministry of AYUSH

With an intention to promote the indigenous medical practices of India, the Central Government constituted a separate Ministry of AYUSH was set up on November 9, 2014 to ensure the optimal development and propagation of AYUSH systems of healthcare. Initiatives:

National AYUSH Mission (NAM)

The Government of India has approved and notified National AYUSH Mission (NAM) as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme on September 29, 2014. Objectives:

  • To provide cost effective AYUSH Services, with a universal access through upgrading AYUSH Hospitals and Dispensaries, co-location of AYUSH facilities at Primary Health Centers (PHCs), Community Health Centers (CHCs) and District Hospitals (DHs).
  • To strengthen institutional capacity at the State level through upgrading AYUSH educational institutions, State Govt ASU&H Pharmacies, Drug Testing Laboratories and ASU & H enforcement mechanism.
  • Support cultivation of medicinal plants by adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) so as to provide sustained supply of quality raw-materials and support certification mechanism for quality standards, Good Agricultural/Collection/Storage Practices.
  • Support setting up of clusters through convergence of cultivation, warehousing, value addition and marketing and development of infrastructure for entrepreneurs.
  • National Health Policy, 2017 ensures access to AYUSH remedies through co-location in public facilities. Policy also recognizes the need to nurture AYUSH system of medicine, through development of infrastructural facilities of teaching institutions, improving quality control of drugs, capacity building of institutions and professionals.

Swasthya Rakshan Program (SRP)

It was launched in October, 2015. on the lines of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) initiated by the Government of India to accomplish the vision of ‘Clean India’, the Ministry of AYUSH initiated Swasthya Rakshan Program (SRP) through its national institutes and research councils to protect and promote health. The main objective of the program is to provide AYUSH treatment and organize camps for screening and early diagnosis of diseases in rural areas. It also aims to create health awareness through health education and distribution of IEC material in local languages for better outreach and compliance. It has been initiated through Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) and Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS) to provide training in AYUSH is being provided to ASHA/ANMs workers in selected districts/ villages. Objectives:

  • To organize Swasthya Rakshan OPDs, Swasthya Parikshan Camps and Health/Hygiene awareness program.
  • Awareness about cleanliness of domestic surroundings and environment.
  • Provide medical aid/incidental support in the adopted Colonies/villages.
  • Documentation of demographic information, food habits, hygiene conditions, seasons, lifestyle etc., incidence/prevalence of disease and their relation to the incidence of disease.
  • Assessment of health status and propagation of Ayurvedic concept of pathya-apathya and extension of healthcare services.

Insurance coverage

Insurance coverage is being extended to AYUSH treatment and a notification in this regard has been issued by IRDA.

e-CHARAK

“e-CHARAK” – e-Channel for Herbs, Aromatic, Raw material And Knowledge is a platform to enable information exchange between various stakeholders involved in the medicinal plants sector. e-Charak, a mobile application, has been jointly developed by the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India and Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

Important Days:

  • International Yoga Day – June 21 – initiated in 2015. The National event was held at Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The theme for 2018 was “Yoga for Peace”.
  • National Ayurveda Day- celebrated on Dhanvantari Jayanti – initiated in 2016. On this occasion, The Ministry of AYUSH instituted “National Dhanwantari Ayurveda Award” to be conferred to eminent Vaidyas and Ayurveda experts and motivate them to adopt best practices of Ayurveda in the pursuit of excellence. “Mission Madhumeha through Ayurveda” launched in 2016. All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) inaugurated in 2017 in Delhi.
  • Siddha Day – January 4, 2018 observing the birthday of Siddhar Agathiyar at Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai.

Major initiatives by the Ministry of AYUSH in 2018 are as follows

  • An “International Conference on Yoga for Public Health” was organized by Ministry of AYUSH at Panaji, Goa.
  • To ensure availability and regular supply of raw material of medicinal plants for AYUSH drugs, the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) under its “Central Sector Scheme on Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants” is augmenting the medicinal plants resources in the wild and also promoting their large-scale cultivation in farmers’ field under Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM).
  • A Central Sector Scheme of ‘Pharmacovigilance Initiative for ASU&H Drugs’ has been implemented by the Ministry of AYUSH from the financial year 2017-18. The scheme has established a National Pharmacovigilance Coordination center for collecting reports on quality aspects from 05 intermediary and 43 peripheral centers with a financial allocation to the tune of Rs 1.66 crore approved for implementation of the initiative in 2018-19.
  • NABH Accreditation: to National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune, Maharashtra, National Institute of Unani Medicine, Bangalore, Karnataka, National Institute of Yoga, Delhi and National Institute of Siddha, Chennai.
  • Ministry of AYUSH has made it obligatory for AYUSH hospitals for their accreditation to NABH standards with a view to enhancing the quality and safety aspects.
  • In pursuance of the proposal of the Ministry of AYUSH the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology has decided to adopt the word AYUSH in Hindi and English languages for scientific and technical purposes. As approved by the Commission, the word AYUSH will have the meaning “Traditional and Non-Conventional Systems of Healthcare and Healing which include Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, Homoeopathy etc.”

The month of September was celebrated as PoshanMaah in all the AYUSH hospitals/dispensaries, teaching institutes, research councils, and their peripheral units – Telangana Today
