Union minister of state for health and family welfare Anupriya Patel opened an urban primary health & wellness center at the ITI locality here under the Center’s Ayushman Bharat program. She was accompanied by Mizoram health minister Lal Thanzara and other officials. Inaugurating the center, Patel lauded the state government for its healthcare scheme and said the Center was ready to extend help for its expansion. She said reproductive and child health services under the National Health Mission, through primary and secondary healthcare, had benefited innumerable people in the country. She said the government had introduced the Ayushman Bharat program to cover diseases including cancer, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

Patel said the Ayushman Bharat program has two pillars – the National Health Protection Mission and conversion of 1.5 lakh health sub-centers, primary health centers and urban primary health centers into health and wellness centers. In Mizoram, there are 20 sub-centers, eight urban primary health centers and four rural primary health centers. Patel said all the sub-centers and primary health centers in the state would be converted into health & wellness centers under Ayushman Bharat program and the health services would be increased from two to 12.

She said the health services will cover various types of cancer, including cervical, oral and breast cancer, diabetes, leprosy, high blood pressure, tuberculosis, ENT, ophthalmic, oral & dental, geriatric, palliative and mental care. Lal Thanzara thanked the Center for extending support towards establishment of Mizoram’s first medical college, the Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research.
