North Bengal gets pain clinic at NBMCH

A pain clinic that will offer treatment for all kinds of muscle and bone-related pains was launched by the department of physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R) of North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (NBMCH) on Tuesday.

Partha Pratim Pan, the head of the department, said the facility — that would provide holistic and comprehensive treatment for all kinds of muscle and bone-related pains — would largely help north Bengal residents.

“After SSKM hospital in Calcutta, the NBMCH, located on the outskirts of Siliguri, is the first medical college that will provide physical medicine and rehabilitation treatment to patients with advanced machinery. We wish to improve the quality of life of patients who are stressed with long-standing pain,” said Pan.

“We deal with pain in a holistic manner and focus on diagnosing the cause of pain, followed by treatment with medicines, exercise and electro-therapy through therapeutic devices,” Pan added.

According to sources, treatment will be provided at the clinic with the latest modalities like cryotherapy, laser therapy, short wave diathermy (SWD) and electromyographic biofeedback therapy (EMG-BFB).

“Patients can go for interventions where the exact source of pain is seen under fluoroscopy guidance or ultrasonography machines. At present, such facilities are available only at the SSKM,” said a source.

Sushanta Roy, the officer on special duty of the state health department deputed in north Bengal said: “Treatment related of recent and longstanding pain, including cancer, will be provided at the clinic.” Telegraph India
