Staff shortage hits services at Civil Hospital in Amritsar

The acute shortage of medical and clerical staff at Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs Memorial Civil Hospital is taking a toll on the employees’ health and affecting the medical services too.

The 200-bed Civil Hospital has a total of 15 posts of emergency medical officers (EMOs). However, at present it has only four EMOs available. The hospital runs 24X7 trauma centre, which the EMOs are managing in three shifts.

The employees say due to shortage of employees, those working at various posts are overburdened. They add that most of the clerical staff working at the hospital are either on deputation from other places or are contractual.

Employees’ Welfare Association president Sumit Sharma said, “The staff shortage is also affecting services to patients as they have to wait longer for their turn. If the required staff is available, the hospital will be able to provide better services.” Tribune India
