UNICEF rehabilitates 38 damaged health centers across Syria

In Homs, western Syria, UNICEF rehabilitated a badly affected health care centre in Bab Al Dreib neighbourhood. It was severely damaged during the heavy fighting and out of service until 2023, leaving the area without any healthcare. Between March and September 2023, UNICEF supported the rehabilitation works of the centre and in November 2023 it reopened in full capacity.

The UNICEF -supported works included structural assessments of the destroyed building, provision of repair works to ensure its stability and safety, and installation of new electrical systems to provide reliable power supply for medical equipment and lighting. Plumbing repair works and the provision of sanitation systems helped to ensure access to clean water and proper waste disposal. At the end of 2023, 20 health workers are operating the centre and it serves around 7,000 people living in four communities.

Since the beginning of 2023, UNICEF has rehabilitated 38 damaged health and nutrition centres across Syria. An additional 22 clinics are still under rehabilitation. With these centres, UNICEF has reached more than 400,000 people and provided them with access to basic health and nutrition services. Contributions from the Government of Japan and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, made these activities possible. UNICEF.org
